New Hampton School Design

When New Hampton School had plans on the table to build a new student dormitory, Terrain Planning & Design was called in to coordinate the re-design of the landscape. We worked directly with the building architects with the goal of maximizing the circulation and flow of pedestrian traffic around the dormitory. Staying true to the “residential” design intent of the new buildings, natural gathering areas were also developed with a series of concrete paver patios and informal privacy plantings designed to give the “home away from home” feeling to students who would be calling O’Connor Dormitory their “home” for 9 months a year.

Another concern with this New Hampton School Project was site drainage. Terrain Planning & Design partnered with engineers to create a storm water management plan that re-directs runoff and treats the water before it reaches the local aquifer. Through a network of strategically placed rain gardens and bio-retention swales, storm water is now channeled away from the buildings, filtered through an engineered soil mixture and native plant material in order to successfully drain the water accumulated on site – thus eliminating the need for offsite drainage.
